Pickin' Pixels is a pocket-sized pixel art editor and color-by-number puzzle game for iOS. It suits both free-form artists who want a blank canvas and puzzle lovers who prefer following a numbered template to uncover a hidden image. Templates span categories like Animals, Food, Vehicles, Nature, Faces, and Objects, with new packs unlocking as you complete more designs. A personal gallery keeps your finished works safe, ready to export or share whenever you like.

Inside the App

How It Works

Pickin' Pixels gives you two distinct ways to work with a grid. In free-draw mode you choose your grid size, load up a full color palette, and paint however you like — tapping individual cells, dragging to paint continuous lines, or using a fill tool to flood larger areas at once. In template mode the grid arrives pre-numbered: each cell carries a number that corresponds to a palette color, and you simply pick the right color and tap the matching cells until the hidden image emerges.

Templates, Categories, and Progression

Templates are organized into named categories — Animals, Food, Vehicles, Nature, Faces, and Objects. Early categories like Animals and Food are available from the start, while later ones are locked behind completion milestones: Vehicles requires 5 more completed designs, Nature 10, Faces 20, and Objects 35. Within each category, puzzles carry difficulty labels (Easy, Medium) and a three-star rating system that rewards faster completion times. Finished puzzles are logged with their completion date and star count and stored in a personal gallery, from which you can save to photos, share, or delete them.

Drawing Tools and Visual Style

The workspace sits on a deep blue grid with white dashed guidelines. The color palette is displayed as a row of colored circles at the bottom of the screen, and a progress counter tracks how many cells you've filled out of the total. The app's icon — a pixelated golden egg on a cosmic gradient background — sets the visual tone: retro pixel art rendered with bold, high-contrast colors including golden yellow, deep purple, cosmic blue, red, and orange.

A Word on Accessibility

The number-to-color mapping system is the core mechanic, but it's also the main accessibility concern. Small grid cells demand precise taps, and all progress feedback — cell counts, timers, completion indicators — appears to be visual only, with no documented audio alternatives. Users who need larger touch targets or non-color-based cues may find the experience limiting in its current form.

Pickin' Pixels is at its most satisfying when a numbered template slowly resolves into a recognizable image — the logic of the number grid and the pleasure of the reveal work together in a way that straight free-draw mode doesn't quite replicate.

Pixels & How-Tos

How does the template color-by-number system work?
Each template displays numbered cells that correspond to specific palette colors. You simply pick a color from the palette and tap all the matching numbered cells to gradually reveal the hidden pixel image.
Can I draw my own pixel art without using a template?
Yes — Pickin' Pixels lets you start from a blank canvas where you choose a grid size and pick any colors from the full palette. You can tap individual cells to fill them, drag to paint lines, or use the fill tool to cover large areas at once.
How do I unlock new template packs?
New template packs are unlocked by completing more designs. For example, Vehicles requires completing 5 more puzzles, Nature requires 10, Faces requires 20, and Objects requires 35.
How can I save or share a finished pixel art piece?
Once a design is complete, you can save it to your personal gallery, export it as an image to your photos, or share it directly from the app using the Share button.
What determines the star rating after finishing a template?
The star rating is based on how fast you complete a design — the quicker you finish, the higher the star rating you earn.
