Gates Measure turns a smartphone screen into a physical gap gauge by calibrating the display to real-world millimeters. The core workflow is straightforward: place a known-thickness object on the screen, match the on-screen gauge to its size, and save that calibration. From that point on, sliding the gauge to match any opening gives you a repeatable numeric reading directly in millimeters.

How the measurement system works

The active measurement screen shows a horizontal slider with a pink handle, a live readout of the current width, and — if you're working against a Fit Profile — an immediate status label telling you whether the gap is too narrow, too wide, or within the specified tolerance. That pass/fail feedback is color-coded green for in-range results. Haptic feedback can be enabled in Settings, delivering light taps when you reach the target range or adjust the width, which is genuinely useful when your eyes are on the gap rather than the screen.

Fit Profiles and saved workflows

The standout organizational feature is Fit Profiles. Each profile stores a name, a target width in millimeters, and an allowed tolerance above and below that target. The main dashboard lists recent measurements alongside saved profiles — examples shown include a drawer left rail at 0.50 mm ± 0.03 mm and a door frame width at 710 mm ± 0.05 mm — so recurring tasks don't require re-entering values every time. An optional reference photo field lets you attach a visual reminder to each profile, though it's not required.

Visual design: bold and divisive

The UI wraps a precise utility in an unexpected fantasy skin. The app icon is a red crystalline gem in a golden Greek-key frame surrounded by blue lightning. Screenshots feature a Zeus figure in golden armor with glowing eyes, rainbow-prismatic phone bezels, floating gold coins, and storm-cloud backgrounds. The measurement screens themselves stay functional — white text, clear numeric labels, magenta action buttons — but the surrounding decorative layer is heavy. The accessibility notes flag this honestly:

Extensive decorative golden elements and blue/purple gradient backgrounds may cause visual clutter and contrast issues, particularly for users with visual impairments. Small plus/minus buttons and precision slider controls can also be challenging for users who need larger touch targets.

The workflow logic underneath — Calibration → Profile Creation → Active Measurement → Results — is clearly structured regardless of the visual treatment.
