Codon Craft structures its content into themed chapters that build progressively. Early levels introduce DNA structure and the basics of translation; later chapters bring in mutation types and evolutionary adaptation. As players advance, they unlock a free-experiment mode where they design their own proteins and observe how changing a sequence alters the biological outcome. The progression feels deliberate — nothing is thrown at you before the groundwork is laid.

What you actually do

• Assemble amino acid chains by selecting the correct codons in the Protein Lab, watching the translation product update in real time
• Use the DNA Decoder to input a raw DNA sequence and trace it through transcription to a finished protein — sample sequences like "Insulin start" are provided for quick testing
• Repair damaged DNA by identifying point mutations and understanding their downstream effects on protein structure and function
• Study the complete genetic code in the Genetic Codex, which covers all 20 amino acids and 64 codons, with filters for nonpolar, polar, acidic, and basic types
• Drill codon-to-amino-acid recall using a flashcard system that tracks progress across 20 cards per session

Design and atmosphere

The visual design runs on a dark navy-to-deep-purple gradient with neon green, cyan, and orange accents. A cartoon scientist character — white lab coat, safety goggles, expressive face — appears throughout, surrounded by glowing orbs and a gradient feather that drifts across the screen like something lifted from a science-fantasy setting. The layered UI with glow effects and floating elements gives the whole thing an atmosphere of discovery in a lit-up lab at night — the kind of feel that makes even a reference table seem like it belongs inside a living system rather than a textbook.

One honest limitation

The interface carries a high information density, particularly in the Codex and Decoder sections. For users who are genuinely new to molecular biology, the volume of terminology presented simultaneously — codons, start/stop signals, amino acid polarity classes — can be a lot to absorb without prior context. The game's chapter structure helps, but the reference tools don't hold back.

Codon Craft sits in an unusual space: it uses the mechanics of a puzzle game to teach something most people only encounter in a university biology course, and it does so without simplifying the underlying science.
