okay so i downloaded this mostly out of curiosity because we've been going back and forth about whether to put panels on the roof for like two years now... and honestly? this app kind of made the decision feel a lot less overwhelming. you just pick your country, punch in how many panels you're thinking about and their wattage, and it spits out this whole breakdown — daily energy, monthly savings, payback time, even how many trees worth of CO₂ you're offsetting. that last part is weirdly motivating actually...

the roof planner screen is probably my favorite thing. you get this grid where you can visualize the layout, see how much of your roof space gets used, what the total system size ends up being. it's not like a 3D render or anything fancy, but it gets the point across and it's... satisfying to play with?

where it gets a little wobbly for me is the profile setup. there are terms like PSH and PR that have little notes but i kept second-guessing whether i was entering the right values. the auto-fill from country selection helps a lot though, so you're not starting from zero. and then the results screen — the Mission Report — has like four buttons at the bottom and i wasn't sure which one to tap first. minor thing but it felt a little cluttered...

design-wise it's this whole space-and-dragon aesthetic which is... unexpected for a solar calculator? but it's charming in a weird way. the red and gold color scheme is bold. some of the contrast between text and background could be better i think, especially on the darker panels.

overall it does what it says it does and does it clearly. really useful if you're actually considering solar and want something more concrete than a spreadsheet.

PSH and PR confused me too. No glossary. App assumes you already know what peak sun hours means. Most homeowners don't. That's a real usability gap.

Auto-fill is useful but inaccurate in some regions. Tested on Germany profile. PSH defaulted to 17 — that's too high for annual average. Real figure closer to 3–4 h/day. Results will be optimistic.

wait really? i didn't catch that... i just assumed the auto-fill was pulling from reliable data. that's actually kind of important if you're using this to make a real financial decision. like the whole point is to get a realistic payback estimate and if the sun hours are inflated then the savings numbers are inflated too...

Confirmed. PSH of 17 is nonsense for central Europe. Should be around 3.2 to 4.0. App needs verified regional data, not placeholder values. CRITICAL flaw if users trust these outputs blindly.

thats a bummer. i was showing the savings estimate to my dad and now im wondering if we oversold it. the co2 tree thing was cool tho, he liked that part.

Roof Planner grid is genuinely useful. Simple but functional. CO₂ section is a nice touch — translating kg into trees makes it tangible. App has a solid core. PSH data accuracy is the main thing holding it back.

yeah that's kind of where i land too... the bones are good. the roof planner and the CO₂ analogy stuff are genuinely helpful for conversations with people who aren't technical. if they sort out the regional data accuracy it could be a really solid tool.

Astronautics Solar Meter does something I genuinely appreciate: it tries to give you a realistic picture of solar investment rather than just cheerleading for the technology. You plug in your country, the number of panels, their wattage, and it auto-fills a bunch of values — local electricity cost, peak sun hours — which saves a lot of guesswork. The Mission Report screen then spits out daily, monthly, and yearly energy estimates alongside actual savings in dollars and a payback period. For a free utility that handles all that math, it's hard to complain too loudly.

That said, there are some friction points worth naming. The PSH default for my region felt a bit optimistic, and while you can override it manually, there's no clear explanation of what 'performance ratio' actually means for someone who isn't already familiar with solar terminology. The CO₂-to-trees equivalency is a nice touch — genuinely more intuitive than raw kilograms — but I'd like to see the methodology behind it. At this price point (free), the core calculator is solid value; the Roof Planner feature adds a visual layer that helps you sanity-check how many panels actually fit on your roof, which is more useful than it sounds.

To be fair, the dragon-and-space aesthetic is a strange choice for a solar calculator, and it does make the interface feel a little cluttered on smaller screens. The data presentation is clear enough once you get past the visual noise, though. For what you get, this is a genuinely useful planning tool — just go in prepared to double-check the auto-filled defaults against your own local data.

honestly the dragon mascot threw me off so much when I first opened it... like I was expecting a game not a solar calculator lol. but once you get past that it's actually pretty decent? the auto-fill for electricity costs was surprisingly accurate for where I live. I do wish the performance ratio had a little tooltip or something though, I had no idea what to put there

The PSH discrepancy you mention is something I have noticed as well, and it is not a trivial concern. Solar planning tools have, historically, had a tendency to present best-case irradiance figures without adequately flagging the assumptions behind them. I will say that the current version of this app is at least transparent enough to show you the value it has auto-filled, which is more than some earlier iterations of similar tools managed; I have used comparable calculators that buried those defaults entirely. Still, a brief contextual note — even just a line explaining what PSH means in practical terms — would meaningfully improve the experience for users who are not already versed in photovoltaic concepts. The CO₂ section is well-intentioned, though I would echo the point about methodology: knowing that your system is 'equivalent to planting 60 trees' is evocative, but without a source it is difficult to know how seriously to weight it.

That's a fair point about earlier tools. I've used a couple of web-based calculators that were basically black boxes — you got a number and had no idea what went into it. At least here you can see the inputs and adjust them. For what you get at this price point, the transparency is actually one of the stronger arguments for it. Still, 'you can see the inputs' is a low bar; the explanatory layer needs work.

To be fair, the PSH auto-fill issue is real. Mine defaulted to something noticeably higher than what I found from a couple of external solar databases, and that kind of error compounds — your projected savings end up looking rosier than they probably are. That said, the fact that you can manually override everything is what saves it from being genuinely misleading. The Roof Planner is the feature I keep coming back to, actually. It is a much more grounded way to figure out how many panels are realistic before you start calling contractors.

right?? that's honestly the part that stuck with me too... I showed my partner and they were way more interested in the app after seeing that number than when I was trying to explain kWh to them haha

The point about methodology is well taken. To be fair, the trees analogy is more of a communication device than a scientific claim, and it does its job — it makes the CO₂ figure feel tangible. But you are right that a source citation, or at least a note on the conversion factor used, would make it much easier to trust. That said, I am not sure the average person opening a free solar calculator is going to dig into the references even if they are there.

Roof Planner is genuinely fun to mess around with. Spent way too long dragging panel counts up and down :)
